Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.

WSWN – Now You See Me….

Spoiler Alert- I talk about the film go see it and then read if you don’t want to know what happens.

Magician Thriller….. I was a bit dubious, my boyfriend had chosen the film also (he once made me watch Jack Reacher which was an awful film but to be fair I made him watch OZ which was equally as rubbish) (I quite enjoyed OZ though)

The film started well with them introducing the magicians one by one. Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco, Woody Harrelson and the token woman Isla Fisher. So far so good. (I really like Fisher’s piranha trick made me squirm, even if the the piranhas did look more cgi then in the film Piranha 3dd) They all end up meeting in a strrrrrange apartment in New York, wondering who brought them all together. Then bam we are a year later….

I have no problem with skipping forward a bit but the way the film was set up was that we were going to be focussing on the four magicians. I was really keen to see more of Woody Harrelsons Mentalist. But alas no..l we have to watch the predictable FBI man and French Interpol woman fall for each other.

Even class actors like Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman are given very little screen time.

Nope it’s the magic hating FBI Guy played by Mark Ruffalo, who hates magic so much it becomes plainly obvious that he is more involved, so the big reveal feels like it insults the audiences intelligence. The French Interpol woman played by Melanie Laurent, is soooo French she feels like a caricature and is almost unnecessary to the plot.

(I wonder when a woman will be in a thriller without being at the heart of some romance which is designed to attract the female audience..)

Overall the film bills itself as clever but really it thinks it is more clever then it actually is. Some of the ‘magic’ does come across as amazing but then you remember you are in a movie theatre not at a stage show. Also, and I am not one to complain about this noramally, but they could have done with less characters and spent more time on the development of the more interesting individuals (like Woody Harrelson)

Also it would have been nice to find out more about what they got up to on their year off. I feel this film would have been better if it had been from the perspective of the magicians not the law enforcement….

WSTN –Diets – Atkins Disaster

Sorry all been distracted by the gorgeous weather…. so let me fill you in on the latest diet news.

Basically it was an epic fail! I managed 5 days without carbs which is shameful! (the lure of pitta bread and hummus was farrrrr too strong)

Initially I was confused by all the limitations of the diet, and I miscalculated my sugar intake. To keep to the carb intake below the regulations of the diet, I restricted myself to the same meal. (Chicken and bacon salad with an olive oil dressing….. was soo bored of this after 3 days) I think if I had carried on I would have needed to branch out and find other foods that are allowed.

Snacking is particularly difficult! (There is only so much  ham a girl can eat!)

In hindsight I rushed in without researching meals. I would definitely need to do this should I ever want to try this again.

Overall I did lose 2/3 pounds during the 5 days but I think that was mainly due to my confusion and lack of eating anything other than chicken and bacon salad. If your a fan of rules are disciplined enough not to let yourself have the odd chip then I think it could work.

For me I needed to commit to it fully and my heart just wasn’t in it. (I had already planned to fail by starting it the week before I was due to go to Wireless festival)

I think the horror stories of how hard Atkins can be, scared me! I had already been warned by a friend that the diet was horrifically hard and that once you started eating carbs again the weight piled on….. I am determined to give it a proper go though! But maybe when the weather turns back into a normal British summer!

WSTN – Wimbledon

I was one of the lucky few who scored last minute tickets to Wimbledon! (unfortunately not the Sunday but the Saturday)

The main games of the Saturday were the ladies singles final and the mens doubles finals. There was also the ladies doubles finals but we left before that. The omens were good! we scored last minute tickets, the weather looked great and everyone was buzzing about Murray being in the final (he of course went on to win! Hurrah!).

Now like the F1 racing from last week it wouldn’t have been half as enjoyable if it had been raining!!! A lot of Wimbledon is outdoors especially Murray Mount/Henman Hill. Many of the courts don’t have covers too! So we were lucky to have centre court tickets. I would strongly suggest aiming for centre court or court number 1 tickets if you are booking in advance and have a choice.

We got to the grounds early wanting to soak up the atmosphere and get our bearings. This mainly involved wandering around finding the champagne and pimms bar, and then stopping there for a while. I must say the (reasonably priced) Strawberries and cream were lovely however my mum makes better pimms! (and this wasn’t so reasonably priced! Nearly £30!!!!) The bar was right by centre court and was one of the few places that accepted card. That’s right we may be in 2013 but at Wimbledon the food court only takes cash!!!! the food by the way is pretty varied and rather nice. (not just your standing burgers and chips which is sold at every sporting event – however you can still get a burger if needs be)

The main thing I liked about Wimbledon was that it was civilised! There was no pushing or shoving and no (very) drunk people. (although the couple next to me were knocking back the gin and tonics!) Centre court itself is not small by any means but is not sooo large that the tennis players look like match sticks and the ball is a tiny yellow speck.

We were very lucky with our seats. They were far back but they were on the shady side of the court! Temperatures reached over 28 degrees on Saturday and opposite us on the other side of the court there were a lot of fainters. The paramedics had to be called out a few times for people who had fainted in the heat. A lot of people in those seats were glad that the women’s final was so short.

I must  point out that I haven’t talked about the actual tennis much. The women’s final was…. erm….. disappointing. Bartoli destroyed Lisicki in straight sets. It was rather uncomfortable to watch a tennis player go to pieces so comprehensively! The men’s doubles final was entertaining but it was hard to get behind the Americans who were the number one seed. (I’ve nicknamed them the bryanators! as they twins with the surname Bryan, appear to be unbeatable and share the personality of a robot. A single robot designed to do a tedious task)

Overall it was a good day! the atmosphere was amazing the tennis was average but I think that was down to the nerves of the players not Wimbledon.

I am already looking to see if I can get men’s final tickets next year! I don’t even care if Murrays not in it! I might even try for the women’s final, I just hope there are more interesting and deserving players in it next year!

WSTN – Dieting – The Atkins Conundrum – Indroduction

This month I am trying out the Atkins diet… (I am aware it has been done to death but as an avid dieter I want to see if it works)

First things first, it is not just a no carb diet. I am currently studying the introduction phase (I must admit I am studying via Wikipedia and free sites on google so I apologise if I get some of my info wrong; I’m too cheap to buy the book). Now like most people I didn’t know there was 4 phases and that there is a large amount of science behind it.

So the science bit…… the reduction in carbs is supposed to stop the body burning the new glucose for energy and make it focus on the stored fat for fuel (layman’s terms, sorry I’m not a scientist). Basically its like not having a weekly shop and using everything up in your cupboards. (nobody ever uses everything in their cupboards even when going on holiday or moving house, there’s always a tin of beans lurking in the back (you cant have baked beans on this diet, I actually don’t think I can live without Heinz!))

Anyway there are different types of carbs which you have to learn!!!!   (when I stared this I didn’t realise I would have to become a carb specialist) There’s carbs in pretty much everything so they don’t make it easy for you. During the introduction your allowed under 20 net grams of carbs a day and 12-14 of these have to come from a special list of….. you’ve guessed it…… SALAD… oh! and veg too! (ever so exciting! even writing about it I am starting to feel like a rabbit!)

But its not just the ‘evil carbs’ (pasta, bread etc) you have to watch out for. You are limited protein wise! Sugar is also restricted and has to be naturally occurring!!!! The worst thing for me is that your cheese consumption is limited!!! (I am actually addicted to cathedral city cheese)

Oh and by the way…. no alcohol! For two weeks! and eight pints of water a day instead! Now this isn’t such an issue for me. I drink an obscene amount of water as it is. The caffeine restriction bit also doesn’t bother me too much at I only drink herbal tea.

(The real issue is that I am off to wireless festival next weekend so I am already setting myself up for a fail. I figure one day off isn’t soooooo bad)

In between my planned fail day and now though I will do my darnedest to stick to it. I will keep you updated as to how well I do and how badly I will eventually fail!!! (I am going to get bored of weighing cheese eventually…….)

Any suggestions for lunches or meals out whilst on this carb controlled diet would be much appreciated!

P.S. I am not a doctor or a nutritionist. If you would like to try the atkins diet I would suggest you do your own reading about it before following in my very confused footsteps!

WSWN – The Internship

SPOILER ALERT don’t say I didn’t warn you!)

So every now and then I will be writing a quick review on a film I have found particularly interesting or a tv programme that has grabbed my attention….. This week its The Internship…..

Highly advertised (literally every advert break on 4od) I was a little worried that all the funniest bits would be in the advert. The on the line joke by the time I went to see the film was running a little thin….

There was however a ray of hope, and that was the combination of Wilson and Vaughn! They made the excellent wedding crashers together and most of their solo projects have been amusing.

So I headed to the cinema with mixed feelings about the film. I was also there with my super techy bf who I was convinced would get more jokes in the film then I would due to my lack of coding knowledge. (on this point he did actually spot the co founder of google doing a cameo, which totally would have gone over my head if he wasn’t there)

It follows the tale of two middle aged sales guys who find themselves unemployed and so take an internship at the apparent holy grail of work… Google. (I must note here that they pick up coding very quickly!) From there the ensues the predictable ageism, geeky jokes and even a romance thrown in for good measure! (I’m not here to tell you what happens if your that interested go watch the film)

Now I have heard a large amount of criticism about this film online. But I am not one to follow the crowd nor do I care if the plot was thin and there was no real character depth. It was an hour and a half of silliness and I laughed the whole way through! It was cheesy! And sure it wasn’t that challenging to predict the ending but there were genuinely belly laugh moments (having grown men playing quidditch has to be one of the funniest bits in the movie! It also gave me a moment to out geek my bf as I happen to know all the rules…..intimately)/em>

The only thing that bugged me was that it was a bit google advert but really that was inevitable….

Overall its a good watch if you are looking for something which wont take up too much brain power but will make you laugh. It certainly appealed to the closet geek in me! (closet geek isnt totally correct, I can be quite geeky publicly but tend to hide it at work or amongst friends! It’s hard to explain why you know the star wars script backwards!)
